Natural Deodorant Routine That Works
I know, I know - I’ve been teasing you with this routine for while! The reason why it took so long to post is that I started incorporating a new product right when I mentioned it and I wanted to give it time to see if stays in my routine or not! Good news? It totally did! More good news?! The routine is finally ready to go up so let’s jump right into it!
Deodorant was the very first product I changed when I learned about the toxic ingredients hidden in our everyday personal care products. The switch happened over 3 years ago and since then I’ve struggled with natural deodorant options on the market. I’ve tried probably 90% of what was available and they either just straight up didn’t perform on me or only worked for a couple of weeks and then stopped! I’m sure this is not the case for a lot of people, but if you like me struggle with deodorants - then you understand how truly frustrating it is! Currently, I have a deodorant routine in place that consists of a number of products but it works. It is also baking soda free, cruelty-free and vegan. I realize this might be too extra for some, but that’s what works the best for me. I would say that if you don’t find that you need this much, you can definitely just pick a few of these steps that sound good to you!
Let’s start with the reason why we are here, to begin with - the odor. Very important to understand that the reason for the underarm odor is your own body’s intentional excretion of toxins. And that is exactly why using conventional deodorants is so dangerous! Aluminium-containing antiperspirants prevent toxins from being expelled by the body. These toxins clog up lymph nodes around the armpits and breasts and can cause breast cancer. No thank you!!
In my mind, what we actually need to do is help our body with this daily detoxing process. For this, I use two products externally ( bentonite clay & charcoal bar soap) and one internally (more on this later) Let’s start with the soap! My favorite is The Underarm Bar by Kaia Naturals. Formulated with activated charcoal that pulls toxins out like a magnet and apple cider vinegar that creates a protective barrier against odor-causing bacteria, it’s an easy everyday tool to help your body detox and better the performance of any natural deodorant.
Want to take your armpit detox a step further? Underarm mask! Might sound crazy, but a bentonite clay underarm mask is extremely effective as it draws in toxins through absorption. When it becomes wet, it acts as powerful sponge, absorbing harmful bacteria from the body. All you need to do is mix the clay with water (add a touch of apple cider vinegar if you don’t have sensitive skin and want to supercharge the mask) and apply it to your underarm area for 20 minutes! You can repeat this mask daily until you notice a difference in odor or just do it weekly like me! I use the Sky Organics Indian Healing Clay.
1 tablespoon bentonite clay
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1-2 teaspoons of water (to get right consistency)
This mask might cause redness as it will increase blood-flow to the area, but it will go away quickly. Try it out!
Now that we got most of the detoxing out of the way it’s time to deodorize. I currently use two deodorants for different reasons. First I use the Kaia Naturals Charcoal Deodorant as it’s formulated with activated charcoal (gotta get dem toxins folks), fights odor-causing bacteria and has a lovely formula that glides on easily and dries to a clear powder finish. Kaia also has a wide range of scents and they are all super yummy! Then I use Dr. Lily Ros Deodorant because it’s great at providing long-lasting odor neutralization and wetness absorption due to Tapioca Starch on the ingredient list. (code consciousbee10 should get you 10% off your order) Together they perform incredibly well without me having to re-applying any product throughout the day.
Just FYI, Kaia Naturals currently has a “Power Couple” kit for $20 featuring both the Charcoal Deodorant and the Underarm Bar! Such a perfect combo to kick off your toxin detox routine with! (code consciousbee20 gives you 20% off Kaia Naturals website)
Internal Deodorizer? Chlorophyll
Now we reached the part that stalled this routine from going live for a month. Right when I mentioned this routine, I learned about the use of Chlorophyll as a natural internal deodorizer and decided to give it a try! Chlorophyll functions as a free radical neutralizer may help to support the body's detoxification processes and can help with all types of odor and rumored to help hunters mask scent from prey. It is also an antioxidant and overall a great supplement to take! In my experience, it does help with odor (overall too, not just the underarm area) and as it’s generally beneficial to one’s health I will continue to take it! I usually take it with water, but you can also put it in your morning smoothie!
Like I mentioned earlier, this might seem like too much to many but If you like me struggle with natural deodorants in general - gives this routine a try! I’ve experienced great results and will most certainly continue to stick to out! Let me know your thoughts in the comments down below or on social media accounts.
